C1 Licence Training in Glasgow: The Complete 7.5 Tonne Guide
Everything the C1 category actually covers, who needs to sit a test for it, and how the £995 course at our Blochairn Road centre works from medical to practical test.
C1 is the 7.5 tonne category. It lets you drive a vehicle with a maximum authorised mass between 3,500kg and 7,500kg, plus a trailer up to 750kg. If you passed your car test on or after 1 January 1997 you do not hold it, so you need a provisional entitlement, a D4 medical, the lorry theory test and a practical test. Our Glasgow C1 course covers all four for £995.
What a C1 licence actually lets you drive
C1 sits between the car category and the full lorry categories. It covers rigid vehicles from 3,500kg up to 7,500kg maximum authorised mass, which is the plated weight of the vehicle rather than what happens to be in the back on the day. That plated weight is what matters legally, so a part loaded 7.5 tonne box van still needs C1.
- 7.5 tonne box, curtainsider, tipper and flatbed lorries
- Front line and patient transport ambulances above 3,500kg
- Horseboxes and livestock boxes plated over 3,500kg
- Motorhomes and coachbuilt campers plated over 3,500kg
- Welfare units, mobile catering and event support vehicles
- A trailer of up to 750kg behind any of the above
If the vehicle you need to drive is plated above 7,500kg, C1 will not cover it and Category C is the correct course. Tell us the plated weight and we will confirm which one you need before you pay anything.
The 1 January 1997 rule in plain English
Drivers who passed a car test before 1 January 1997 were given C1 and C1+E entitlement automatically as so called grandfather rights. Anyone who passed on or after that date received Category B only, which stops at 3,500kg. That single change is the reason most people find themselves needing this course later in life, often after being offered a job or after buying a vehicle.
Check the back of your photocard licence. If category C1 appears in the list of entitlements with a valid to date, you already hold it and you do not need to train. If it is absent, everything on this page applies to you.
Medical, theory and practical, in the order they happen
1. D4 medical
A doctor completes the DVLA D4 form covering eyesight, blood pressure, diabetes, heart conditions, sleep apnoea and neurological history. The medical is arranged for you and included in the £995.
2. Provisional C1
We complete the DVLA application with you and send it with the D4 so your provisional entitlement is in place before your driving days are booked.
3. Theory and case study
Multiple choice, hazard perception and the case study element, prepared using the study material included with the course.
4. 12 hours in vehicle
One to one tuition in a 7.5 tonne vehicle we provide, covering reversing exercise, gear and brake control, junctions and dual carriageway work.
C1 or C1+E, and when you need the trailer entitlement
C1 on its own allows a trailer up to 750kg. C1+E raises that to a combination up to 12,000kg, which is what horsebox owners towing a second trailer and event crews with heavy plant trailers usually need. C1+E is a separate practical test taken after C1 is held. Ask us for current C1+E availability and cost, because it depends on the trailer weight you intend to pull.
Where C1 training in Glasgow takes place
Training runs from our base at 130 Blochairn Road, Glasgow G21 2DU, a short run from the M8 and Junction 15, which gives us easy access to both city centre traffic and dual carriageway mileage in the same lesson. We train drivers from across Glasgow and up to 60 miles out, including Paisley, Motherwell, Cumbernauld, Falkirk, Kilmarnock and Stirling.
Questions we get asked about this
The driving element is 12 hours of one to one tuition, which most people take over two or three consecutive days. Allowing for the medical, provisional entitlement and the theory test, plan for around four to six weeks from first enquiry to practical test.
Only if you drive commercially for hire or reward. Driving your own motorhome or a horsebox for your own horses is exempt. Driving a 7.5 tonne lorry for an employer needs the initial Driver CPC qualification and then 35 hours of periodic training every five years.
It is more thorough than a car licence self declaration but most healthy adults pass. Eyesight, blood pressure and conditions such as insulin treated diabetes or sleep apnoea are the areas most likely to need extra evidence from your GP or consultant.
You do not need to. A 7.5 tonne training vehicle is provided and you sit your test in the same vehicle you have trained in, which is a large part of why our first time pass rate sits at 85%.
