C1 Licence Training for Ambulance and Paramedic Staff
Front line ambulances, patient transport vehicles and many response units are plated over 3,500kg. If you qualified into the service after 1997, C1 is the entitlement standing between you and the driving seat.
Most double crewed ambulances sit between 4,600kg and 5,500kg fully equipped, which puts them outside car entitlement. Ambulance and patient transport staff who passed a car test after 1 January 1997 need a C1 licence, and the whole route including the D4 medical, theory and 12 hours of tuition costs £995 with us in Glasgow.
Why the service asks for C1 specifically
An ambulance is a converted chassis carrying a stretcher, a trolley bed, oxygen, a defibrillator, drugs and two crew. Once that conversion is signed off, the plated maximum authorised mass is set well above 3,500kg. Employers check licence categories against the plated weight of their fleet, which is why applicants with a clean car licence are still turned down for driving roles.

Fitting training around a shift rota
Clinical staff rarely have a clear working week to give up. Our booking lines run Monday to Friday 8am till 8pm and the 12 hours of tuition can be split rather than run as a solid block, so a set of rest days can be used without wasting them all in one go. The medical, the DVLA paperwork and the theory preparation are dealt with in the background while you are on shift.
What the driving element covers for an ambulance driver
The DVSA test is the same C1 test everyone sits, but the emphasis in your tuition is different. Smooth progressive braking matters far more when there is a patient on a trolley behind you, and vehicle height and rear overhang matter at hospital entrances and ambulance bays.

Blue light and emergency response driving is a separate qualification delivered by your employer or service. C1 is the licence category that makes you legally able to drive the vehicle at all, and it is what job adverts are asking for.
Career value beyond the ambulance
C1 travels with you. It is regularly asked for by private ambulance providers, event medical companies, care transport operators and community health services, and it sits well on an application alongside a clinical qualification because it removes any doubt about whether you can be rostered to drive.
Questions we get asked about this
Some health boards and private providers fund it for staff already in post, and others expect applicants to hold it before interview. Ask your line manager or recruiter first, and we can provide a written course outline and price for a funding request.
Driving an ambulance for a health service is not classed as hire or reward carriage of goods, so Driver CPC is generally not required. Confirm with your employer, as some private operators still ask for it.
They are separate. The D4 is a DVLA form covering vision, blood pressure, diabetes, heart, neurological and sleep conditions against DVLA group 2 standards, and it is arranged and included in the £995.
Tuition and the test are in the 7.5 tonne training vehicle we provide. The category earned is identical, and familiarisation with your service's own vehicles is handled by your employer once you are cleared to drive.
