ADR Tanks Training: Tankers, Discharge and Central Belt Fuel Work

The tanks module is what separates a packaged goods driver from a tanker driver. It is about product movement, static electricity, coupling and discharge, not just paperwork.

The ADR tanks module qualifies you to carry dangerous goods in tankers and tank containers. It is taken with the core module and the relevant hazard classes, most often Class 3 for fuels and Class 8 for acids, and is the combination fuel and chemical operators in the central belt hire on.

Why tanks is treated as a separate discipline

A liquid load moves. Surge on braking, product settling, vapour behaviour and the risk from static during loading and discharge all belong to tanker work and to nothing else. The module spends its time on the physical handling of product rather than on documentation you have already covered in core.

What the classroom time covers

  • Tank construction, compartments, baffles and what the plate and code tell you
  • Bonding and earthing before loading, and why the sequence matters
  • Loading and discharge procedures, including bottom loading and vapour recovery
  • Surge, roll stability and how a part full tank changes the way the vehicle drives
  • Emergency action for a leaking tank or coupling, and the written instructions in the cab

The work it opens around Glasgow

Grangemouth and the wider central belt drive most of the tanker demand reaching us: fuel distribution to filling stations, chemical movements between plants, and bulk product into manufacturing. Tanker rates are consistently among the strongest in Scottish haulage, which is why experienced Class 1 drivers add tanks rather than more packaged classes.

If an advert says ADR tanks with Class 3, that is core plus tanks plus Class 3. Read it to us and we will confirm before you book anything.

Taking tanks and packages together

Plenty of drivers take both so they are not turned away from either kind of work. It is a longer classroom block and a broader examination, but it costs less than coming back for the second format separately.

Questions we get asked about this

Not legally, if all your work is bulk. Many drivers add packages anyway so they can cover both types of load and are not limited to one operator's traffic.

Once I passed my theory/hazard perception test, I the took my C1 training with Jordan, who made my driving experience a pleasure, Jordan was patient and made me feel at ease the whole time I was driving: advising on things I might change and letting me know when I had driven well etc, really relaxed me to the point of passing my test 1st time after 10hrs of lessons. Very happy customer.

I recently trained for a Class 1 licence with Pass4me and managed to pass first time due to the great training I received. Everyone was very helpful, helped me gain confidence, and made the training enjoyable with the daft patter. Highly recommend David and the rest of the team if you are looking to do HGV training!
