C1+E Training: Towing a Heavy Trailer Behind a 7.5 Tonne
C1 stops at a 750kg trailer. C1+E takes a 7.5 tonne vehicle and trailer combination up to 12,000kg, and it is a separate test with its own manoeuvring skills.
C1+E allows a C1 vehicle with a trailer over 750kg, up to a combination weight of 12,000kg. You must hold C1 first, then pass a separate practical test that includes an uncoupling and recoupling exercise. Who actually needs C1+E
This is a specialist entitlement rather than a general upgrade. The people who need it usually have a fixed combination in mind, and they know exactly what it weighs.

If your combination will exceed 12,000kg, or the towing vehicle itself is over 7,500kg, C1+E is not the right category and you are looking at Category C then C+E instead.
The skills that separate C1+E from C1
Adding a trailer changes almost everything about how the vehicle behaves. Reversing is inverted, the combination cuts in sharply on turns, braking distances grow, and crosswinds on exposed roads around the Central Belt become something you actively manage rather than notice.
Coupling and safety checks
Coupling and uncoupling in the correct order, brake and electrical connections, and confirming the combination is safe before moving.
Reverse manoeuvring
Steering the trailer under control into a bay, including correcting a jackknife early rather than late.
On road handling
Cut in on roundabouts and tight turns, overtaking assessment, and progressive braking with a loaded trailer.
Weight and loading
Working within the combination limit, nose weight, and load distribution across the trailer axles.
Getting there in the right order
C1 first, then C1+E. Some customers pass C1, use the vehicle for a season and add the trailer entitlement later once they are settled in the vehicle, which is usually the calmer approach. Others want both done in one run because a specific job or season is coming. Either works, and the medical you complete for C1 covers both.
Commercial towing considerations
If the towing is commercial, Driver CPC applies to the driver and operator licensing may apply to the business. That is a conversation worth having before you book, because it can change whether C1+E or a full Category C route is the better spend.

Best experience for driver training I've come across! 1st time pass on my class 1 with ease. Tom top lad easy to get on with and plenty experience and Davey is brand new helped out a lot through the process.
