HGV Training for Paisley and Renfrewshire Drivers
Airport freight, Hillington industry and Linwood distribution give Renfrewshire a different mix of driving work to the rest of the west, and the licence choice should follow that.
Renfrewshire drivers train with us in Glasgow, roughly twenty minutes along the M8. Airport related freight, the Hillington estate and Linwood distribution mean plenty of both rigid and articulated work, so C1, Category C and C+E all get booked from this area in similar numbers.
Airport freight changes what employers want
Time critical freight around Glasgow Airport puts a premium on drivers who are calm with tight schedules and secure access procedures. It is also one of the areas where a 7.5 tonne C1 vehicle earns its keep, because a lot of the movements are small, urgent and awkward to get into rather than heavy.
Hillington and the case for Category C
Hillington and the surrounding industrial units run on rigid vehicles: trade supply, engineering, food and drink and plant movements. Category C at £1,695 is the licence those employers advertise for most, and it is the fastest route from car licence to paid driving work in this part of the catchment.
Who books what from Renfrewshire
| Your situation | Where most people start |
|---|---|
| Van driver wanting bigger vehicles | C1 at £995 |
| Warehouse or trade counter staff moving to driving | Category C at £1,695 |
| Already driving rigids, want better rates | C+E at £2,895 |
| Community transport or care work | D1 minibus at £995 |
The practical side of travelling in
The M8 eastbound is the pinch point, so we normally set Renfrewshire trainees an early start and get the driving done before the worst of it. Consecutive day blocks work better than single days spread over weeks, and they get you to test sooner.
Questions we get asked about this
Yes, all of Renfrewshire sits well inside our 60 mile catchment and is a short run along the M8 to our Glasgow base.
It depends on the operator and the vehicle. Many time critical freight movements are on 7.5 tonne vehicles, which C1 at £995 covers, but check the vehicle weight in the advert first.
Category C, often described as Class 2, appears most often for the rigid work across those estates.
Yes. We run Monday to Friday from 8am till 8pm, so training can be built around most shift patterns.
Where to go next

Once I passed my theory/hazard perception test, I the took my C1 training with Jordan, who made my driving experience a pleasure, Jordan was patient and made me feel at ease the whole time I was driving: advising on things I might change and letting me know when I had driven well etc, really relaxed me to the point of passing my test 1st time after 10hrs of lessons. Very happy customer.
