HGV and ADR Training for Falkirk and Grangemouth Drivers
No other part of our catchment is shaped by one industry the way Falkirk is. Grangemouth means tankers, and tankers mean ADR on top of the licence.
Falkirk drivers are typically working towards tanker and petrochemical work at Grangemouth, which needs Category C+E at £2,895 followed by ADR from £496 including the SQA examination and materials. Refresher ADR starts from £300 for drivers renewing an existing certificate.
The order to take things in
- 1Category C first if you hold nothing above a car licence, £1,695 all in.
- 2Category C+E next, £2,895, because tanker work is almost entirely articulated.
- 3Driver CPC in place so you can drive professionally, £55 per seven hour periodic course.
- 4ADR core plus tanks plus the hazard classes the operator specifies, from £496.
- 5Diarise the ADR expiry five years ahead and renew before it, not after.
Why Class 3 dominates round here
Flammable liquids are the bulk of what moves out of Grangemouth: petrol, diesel, solvents and chemical feedstocks. Class 3 with the tanks module is the combination that comes up most often in local adverts, with Class 8 corrosives added by chemical operators and Class 2 gases where LPG is involved.
Falkirk is not only tankers
There is steady rigid distribution around Larbert, Stenhousemuir, Denny and Bonnybridge, plus construction and civils work along the M9 corridor. Category C is plenty for a good share of that, and several drivers start there and add C+E later once they know they want the tanker route.
Employers in the Grangemouth cluster frequently fund ADR for drivers already in post. We invoice companies directly if yours will pay.
Questions we get asked about this
For dangerous goods in tankers, yes. You need the licence for the vehicle plus ADR core, the tanks module and the relevant hazard classes, most commonly Class 3.
From £496 including classroom training, the SQA examination and materials, with refresher training from £300. The final price depends on how many modules and classes you take.
The ADR certificate is separate from the driving entitlement, but tanker roles are articulated work, so operators expect C+E alongside it.
It varies with test availability, but planned properly it is a matter of weeks rather than months once the medical and theory are done.
Where to go next
- ADR tanks training the module tanker work is built on.
- ADR refresher training from £300 before your certificate expires.
- Category C+E training £2,895 including 25 hours tuition.

Once I passed my theory/hazard perception test, I the took my C1 training with Jordan, who made my driving experience a pleasure, Jordan was patient and made me feel at ease the whole time I was driving: advising on things I might change and letting me know when I had driven well etc, really relaxed me to the point of passing my test 1st time after 10hrs of lessons. Very happy customer.
