C1 Training for Fire Service and Local Authority Staff
Appliances, tipper crews, gritters, welfare units and grounds maintenance vehicles all sit above car entitlement. C1 is the category that gets public sector staff signed off to drive them.
Fire service and council fleets are almost entirely plated above 3,500kg, so staff who passed a car test after 1 January 1997 need C1 before they can be rostered to drive. Our Glasgow C1 course is £995 per person including the D4 medical, theory, 12 hours of one to one tuition and the practical test, and we can schedule several staff in sequence.
Where C1 sits in a public sector fleet
Local authority and emergency service fleets are mixed, and the licence needed follows the plated weight of each vehicle rather than the job title. C1 covers a large slice of the middleweight fleet, while the heaviest vehicles need full Category C.

Practical points for a service or department

Driving standards that matter on public sector work
Public sector driving is largely urban, repetitive and observed. Tuition therefore focuses on the things that cause incidents and complaints in that environment: nearside blind spots around cyclists and pedestrians, reversing on live streets and into depots, and controlled positioning on residential roads with parked cars both sides.
Blue light or emergency response driving remains a separate employer delivered qualification. C1 is the licence category that makes it legal for you to be behind the wheel, and it is normally a prerequisite before any service specific driver development begins.
Progression and retention value
For staff, C1 is a portable qualification that supports internal moves into driving roles and is regularly listed on job specifications. For employers, it widens the pool of people who can legally take a vehicle out, which is usually cheaper than agency cover.
Questions we get asked about this
Yes. We can provide a written course outline and an invoice for a training budget or purchase order, and finance options are also available for individuals paying themselves.
It depends on the role. Driving in connection with carrying goods commercially generally requires Driver CPC, while some public service and non commercial uses are exempt. Check the specific duties, and we run Driver CPC at £55 per seven hour course if it is needed.
That needs Category C, which is our Class 2 course at £1,695 including medical, theory, 16 hours of tuition and the test. Many services put staff through C1 first and upgrade later.
Twelve hours of in vehicle tuition plus a test appointment. That is typically two to three days, and the hours can be split across separate weeks to suit a rota.

Best experience for driver training I've come across! 1st time pass on my class 1 with ease. Tom top lad easy to get on with and plenty experience and Davey is brand new helped out a lot through the process.
