Keeping Your ADR Current: Refresher Training and Renewal
For drivers whose vocational training certificate is coming up for renewal, and for employers who have just noticed three cards expiring in the same quarter.
An ADR vocational training certificate is time limited, and drivers carrying dangerous goods must complete refresher training and reassessment before it expires to keep carrying. Because the certificate covers specific classes and, separately, tankers, the renewal has to match what you actually carry. Expiry dates and current requirements are set nationally, so check your own certificate and confirm the position on gov.uk before booking.
Read your certificate before you book anything
ADR is not one qualification, it is a core module plus the classes you were trained in, plus tanker if you hold it. Two drivers in the same yard can both say they hold ADR and be entitled to carry quite different loads. The renewal has to rebuild the same set, or the set you now need, so the certificate in your wallet is the starting document.
Why drivers get caught out

- Their work changed and they now carry a class they were never trained in
- They added tanker work informally without adding the tanker module
- Nobody in the business owns the renewal calendar, so it lands as an emergency
Letting ADR lapse does not just cost a course fee. It removes you from the loads that pay a premium until you are requalified, and it can leave an employer short of a compliant driver at short notice.
Planning it properly, for a driver

Planning it properly, for an operator
Keep one list of every ADR driver, the classes each one holds, whether they hold tanker, and the expiry date. Review it quarterly. Small operators lose the most money here, because one lapsed certificate in a three driver team can mean turning work away. If several cards expire close together, spread the renewals rather than losing three drivers in one week.

How ADR sits with your other training
ADR is separate from Driver CPC and from your licence category. It is entirely possible to hold a current Driver Qualification Card and an expired ADR certificate, which means you can drive but not carry dangerous goods. Keep both dates in the same place so one does not hide the other.
ADR requirements and validity periods are governed by regulations that are updated periodically. Confirm the current position for your certificate on gov.uk rather than relying on what applied at your last renewal.
