C1 Driving Test: What Happens and How to Prepare

Before you can book the practical

Nobody walks straight into a C1 practical. The examiner will only see you once three earlier stages are complete: a D4 medical signed off by a doctor, provisional C1 entitlement added to your licence by DVLA, and a pass in the theory elements. On our course those stages are arranged in that order, so by the time the practical is booked the paperwork is already behind you and the only thing left to prove is your driving.

What makes C1 different from a car test

The vehicle is wider, taller and slower to stop than anything a Category B driver is used to. Examiners are looking for three habits in particular: mirror checks that come before every change of speed or position, planning far enough ahead that you rarely need hard braking, and positioning that accounts for the rear overhang on turns. A C1 van is short enough that people are tempted to drive it like a large car. That is the most common reason a confident driver picks up faults, and it is what the 12 hours on our course are designed to break.

How the 12 training hours are used

• Early time on the manoeuvring area until the reverse is repeatable, not lucky
• Urban driving around the north and east of Glasgow, where lane discipline and tight junctions matter
• Faster roads, so you are comfortable joining and leaving at the right speed
• Rehearsal of the safety questions until the answers come without thinking
• A mock test drive before the real one, marked the way an examiner would

What the C1 test costs you

The examiner's fee is set nationally by DVSA, not by training schools. On our C1 course you do not pay it separately: the £995 price covers the medical, theory and case study preparation, study material, 12 hours in the vehicle and the practical test itself. On the day

Bring your photocard licence; without it the test cannot go ahead. Wear sensible footwear, eat beforehand and arrive early enough for a short warm-up drive with your instructor. Up to 15 driving faults are allowed, but a single serious or dangerous fault means a fail, so steady and deliberate beats quick. The result is given as soon as you park, followed by a debrief on the marking sheet that your instructor can listen to.

If you do not pass first time

Our first-time pass rate is 85%, which also means some drivers need another attempt. There is a minimum gap of three working days before a retest. Rather than repeating the whole course, we look at what the examiner marked and focus the next session on that. Ask the team how further training would be arranged before you start, so the basis is clear.
