Cat D Driving Test: Passing Your Bus Test
What happens when you take a full-size bus out with a DVSA examiner, and how 16 hours of training get you ready for it.
The Cat D driving test is taken in a full-size bus. You answer vehicle safety questions, complete a reversing exercise off road, then drive for about an hour on public roads, including stops that show you can pull in and move off smoothly. It comes after the medical, provisional Category D entitlement and PCV theory. The test is included in our £1,695 Category D course, with 16 hours of one-to-one bus training.

A service bus is long, has a big front overhang and puts you well ahead of the front wheels. That seating position changes how you judge turns: you have to drive past the point where a car would turn in, then steer, or the rear wheels clip the kerb. Most of the early training is about retraining your eye for that geometry before the test examiner sees you.

Show-and-explain questions on the bus: tyres, lights, fluid levels, doors and emergency exits.
Off-road reverse
An S-shaped reverse into a bay marked by cones, using the mirrors only.
Road driving
About an hour through urban and faster roads, with set exercises and independent driving.
Result and debrief
The examiner explains the result and faults straight after the drive.
Pulling in and moving off
Bus stops are where the examiner learns the most about you. They want to see mirror checks before you signal, a steady approach so the bus stops close and parallel to the kerb, a clear check of the offside before moving off, and no lurch as you pull away. On our course you practise this repeatedly in real Glasgow traffic so it is routine by test day.
Passenger care counts
Even with an empty bus, you are marked as though it were full. Smooth acceleration, gentle braking and controlled cornering matter as much as observation. Training also covers boarding procedures and wheelchair access, because examiners may ask how you would handle them and because you will use them from your first shift.
Common reasons bus tests are failed
- Turning in too early and mounting or striking the kerb with the rear wheels
- Missing the offside mirror check when leaving a stop
- Approaching junctions too fast for the size of the vehicle
- Hesitating so long at roundabouts that it becomes a fault in itself
After you pass
Passing Category D also gives you D1, so minibuses are covered. To drive a bus professionally you also need Driver CPC: new drivers complete the initial qualification, including the Module 4 practical demonstration, and after that 35 hours of periodic training every five years. We run Driver CPC courses at £55 per seven-hour day at our Blochairn Road base.

Best experience for driver training I've come across! 1st time pass on my class 1 with ease.
