D1 Minibus Driving Test: What to Expect
How the minibus practical test works, what examiners look for when you are responsible for passengers, and how we prepare you for it.
The D1 driving test is a practical test in a minibus. It starts with vehicle safety questions and an off-road reversing exercise, then moves to around an hour on public roads where the examiner watches for smooth, passenger-aware driving. You sit it after the medical, provisional D1 entitlement and passenger theory. Our £995 D1 course includes the test and 12 hours of one-to-one minibus training.

If you passed your car test on or after 1 January 1997, D1 is not on your licence automatically. Schools, care services, community transport groups and private hire firms regularly need staff who can legally carry passengers in a minibus, and the practical test is the last step to adding that entitlement.

What the examiner is really watching
A minibus test is marked on the same broad skills as any large-vehicle test, but the examiner is imagining people in the seats behind you. Harsh braking, rushed turns and jerky pulling away all count against you because they would throw passengers about. Expect questions on door and emergency exit checks as well as the usual vehicle checks, and be ready to explain how you would keep passengers safe while boarding and getting off.
The reversing exercise in a minibus
Many drivers assume the manoeuvre will be easy because a minibus feels closer to a large van. The catch is visibility: with no rear window view to rely on, you work from the mirrors alone, and a minibus body has more overhang than people expect. We spend early training time on the manoeuvring area so the reverse is controlled and repeatable before road work takes over.
Habits worth building before test day
- Brake early and progressively, easing off just before the stop
- Take corners slower than you would in a car, with the steering smooth rather than late
- Check mirrors before pulling in to a kerb, where cyclists often appear
- Leave space so you can stop without drama if the vehicle ahead brakes
- Say your checks out loud during practice so they become automatic
Test cost and retests
The practical test fee is set by DVSA, but on our course it is already inside the £995 along with the medical, theory preparation and study material, so there is nothing extra to budget for the first attempt. If a retest is needed there is a minimum gap of three working days, and we focus further training on the faults the examiner recorded.
