What Will Driver CPC Cost Me Over Five Years?

The two costs, kept separate

New professional drivers pay for the initial qualification, which includes the case study and Module 4 at £199. Everyone driving professionally then pays for periodic training: thirty five hours every five years, at £55 per seven hour course with us. Those are different bills at different points in a career, and conflating them is how people end up confused about what they owe.

The cost that is not on the invoice

Time. Seven hours is a working day, and five of them in one month is a week out of the diary. Drivers who book one course a year barely notice it. Drivers who realise in month fifty eight that they have done nothing lose earnings on top of the course fees, and they take whatever dates are left rather than the subjects they would find useful.

Who pays, you or the employer

• Many employers fund periodic training and book it for their drivers as part of compliance
• Agency drivers usually fund their own and treat it as a cost of trading
• Some employers pay and ask for a commitment period in return, which is worth reading properly
• Owner drivers pay directly and can plan the timing to suit quiet weeks

If your employer books your CPC, keep your own record of hours completed anyway. The responsibility for holding a valid Driver Qualification Card follows the driver, not the job you happened to be in at the time.

Getting value rather than just hours

All thirty five hours count equally, so drivers often take whatever is cheapest and nearest. It is a wasted opportunity. Choose subjects that make you more employable or safer: load security if you are on curtainsiders, tachograph rules if you keep getting infringements, or defect reporting if you are moving towards a shunting or yard supervisory role.

Where Module 4 fits

Module 4 is a one off for new professional drivers, not part of the thirty five hours. It is a practical demonstration covering loading, security, safety checks and dealing with an emergency, and at £199 it is the last piece of the initial qualification rather than an optional extra.
