HGV Licence Cost vs Earnings: How Long Until It Pays for Itself?

Count the whole cost, not the headline

Training providers quote all sorts of numbers, and the reason they differ is what has been left out. A course price that looks £400 cheaper than ours often excludes the medical, the theory test fees, the practical test fee, or the Module 4 assessment. When you are comparing, ask one question: what is the total figure I will have paid by the time the licence is on my card?

The realistic side costs

There are a few genuine extras nobody should hide from you. Time off work for the training week, if your employer will not release you. Travel to the training yard and the test centre. Boots if you do not own a decent pair. And, for perhaps one in seven people, a retest fee if the first attempt does not go your way. Budget a couple of hundred pounds of headroom and you will not get an unpleasant surprise.

What the licence earns

Central Scotland driving pay varies by class, shift and sector, but the shape is consistent. Class 2 day work around Glasgow sits in the middle of the local wage range and beats most warehouse, retail and general labouring rates. Class 1 pays more, nights pay more again, and agency rates rise sharply when a customer is short at short notice. Add overtime, which is widely available, and the annual figure moves substantially.

The important number is not the headline salary. It is the difference between what you earn now and what you will earn driving. That difference is what actually pays for the course. Someone moving from a £12 an hour warehouse role to Class 1 trunking usually sees the gap close the £2,895 within a matter of weeks of full time work.

A worked payback

Almost no other qualification in the UK gets you into a skilled, permanently in demand trade for under £3,000 and under two months of elapsed time. That is the honest case for HGV training, and it is why the phone keeps ringing.

Ways to soften the outlay

You do not always have to fund it alone. Employers in the Glasgow area regularly sponsor Class 1 training in exchange for a service commitment. Employability programmes and Scottish funding routes support some career changers. And splitting the journey, taking Category C now and adding C+E later, spreads the spend without wasting any of it, because Category C is a required step towards C+E anyway. The ongoing costs after you qualify

Two things recur. Driver CPC periodic training, 35 hours every five years, at £55 per seven hour course with us, so £275 across the cycle. And your medical, which is renewed every five years until 45, then every five years to 65, then annually. Both are modest against driving income and many employers pay for the CPC days.

Where the money is not well spent

Be wary of very cheap courses with large group sizes, because the hours in the seat are what get you through the test, and four people sharing a vehicle means a quarter of the driving.
