How Long Does HGV Training Take From Start to Test?
The realistic timeline: medical, provisional entitlement, theory, then the driving days, and where the delays usually come from.
Plan for roughly four to eight weeks from first enquiry to practical test for most drivers. The driving itself is short, 12 hours for C1, 16 for Category C and 25 for C+E, usually taken over consecutive days. The waiting is in the DVLA provisional entitlement and in test availability, not in the training.
The four stages and what each one costs you in time
- 1D4 medical: booked quickly, usually a single appointment
- 2Provisional entitlement: the DVLA turnaround is the least predictable part, so start it early
- 3Theory and case study: prepare with the included study material, then book when you are ready
- 4Practical training and test: consecutive days in the vehicle followed by the test
Where people lose weeks
Almost always at the provisional stage. A medical form that arrives incomplete, or an application posted late, adds more delay than anything in the training itself. We complete the paperwork with you rather than leaving it to you, precisely because it is the bottleneck.
If you have a job start date, tell us the date when you first call. We plan backwards from it rather than fitting you into the next free slot.
Adding Driver CPC to the timeline
If you are driving professionally, Module 4 sits alongside the practical training and adds a short amount of time rather than weeks. Periodic CPC, at 35 hours over five years, happens after you are working and does not delay getting on the road.
Questions we get asked about this
The driving days can be intensive, but the medical, provisional entitlement and theory test have to be completed first, so a single week from a standing start is not realistic.
16 hours of one to one in vehicle tuition, which most drivers take across consecutive days before the test.
Most people do for the driving days. Our booking lines are open until 8pm so the arranging can be done outside working hours.
Where to go next
- Category C training 16 hours in vehicle, medical and test included.
- Category C+E training 25 hours in vehicle for Class 1.
- The HGV medical the first step, and the one to book early.

Once I passed my theory/hazard perception test, I the took my C1 training with Jordan, who made my driving experience a pleasure, Jordan was patient and made me feel at ease the whole time I was driving: advising on things I might change and letting me know when I had driven well etc, really relaxed me to the point of passing my test 1st time after 10hrs of lessons. Very happy customer.

I recently trained for a Class 1 licence with Pass4me and managed to pass first time due to the great training I received. Everyone was very helpful, helped me gain confidence, and made the training enjoyable with the daft patter. Highly recommend David and the rest of the team if you are looking to do HGV training!
