Why switching needs a new test

Goods and passenger categories are separate families on a UK licence. A bus licence proves you can handle a long vehicle full of people; it does not cover the loading, weight and cargo-security side of a lorry, so DVSA treats Category C as a different entitlement. The same applies in reverse for lorry drivers who want to move onto buses.

What feels different on the road

Bus drivers are used to a long wheelbase, frequent stops and passengers moving about. A lorry brings a higher cab, different weight distribution depending on the load, and much more reversing into yards and loading bays. Going the other way: HGV to PCV

Planning the time

Because the practical skills are already there, drivers moving between bus and lorry often find the training settles quickly. The test standard is the same as for any new learner, though, and examiners expect the checks and manoeuvres of the new vehicle type to be done properly. Once you hold both C and D, the same medical renewal cycle applies to your vocational entitlement, and one set of 35 periodic Driver CPC hours every five years keeps you qualified to drive professionally.
