C1 for Removals, Catering and Event Crews
The 7.5 tonne box van is the workhorse of removals, mobile catering and event production. C1 is what lets you crew it yourself instead of hiring in a driver every job.
Removal lorries, mobile kitchens and event production vans are commonly plated between 4,500kg and 7,500kg, which needs C1 rather than a car licence. The course costs £995 with the D4 medical, theory, study material, 12 hours of one to one tuition and the practical test included, and Driver CPC is normally required on top when you are driving commercially.
Why small operators end up needing C1
A 3.5 tonne Luton runs out of capacity fast. A two bedroom house move, a full bar and kitchen kit, or a stage, cabling and lighting rig for a weekend festival all weigh more than the payload allows once you have added crew, ramps, straps and blankets. Hiring a driver in for every job eats the margin on the work, and turning jobs down costs more again.

Weight discipline when you load your own vehicle
In these trades the driver is usually also the loader, which makes overloading a real risk. Kit gets added year on year and nobody reweighs the vehicle. Part of the tuition is spent on the plate, axle limits and load distribution, because a vehicle that is legal on total weight can still be overloaded on the front axle if the heavy cases all go behind the cab.
Know your plate
Read the maximum authorised mass and axle weights from the plate and the V5C, then weigh the vehicle loaded for a typical job.
Distribute the load
Heaviest items low and over the axles, not stacked at one end, so handling and braking stay predictable.
Secure it properly
Straps, blankets and load bars, checked before every leg rather than only at the start of the day.
Plan access
Height, length and overhang against tight lanes, city centre loading bays, festival ground and multi storey access.
Commercial driving means Driver CPC as well
If you are driving a vehicle over 3,500kg for hire or reward, initial Driver CPC and then 35 hours of periodic training every five years apply on top of the licence category. We run Driver CPC at £55 per seven hour course. There are limited exemptions, including driving in connection with your own work where carrying goods is not the main activity, so it is worth a conversation about how your business actually operates before you assume either way.
If your kit routinely fills a 7.5 tonne van, consider whether Category C at £1,695 is the better investment. It removes the weight ceiling entirely and puts far more subcontract and haulage work within reach.
What it does to your quoting
Once the licence is in place you can quote the bigger jobs, take last minute work without chasing a driver, and stop paying a day rate to someone else to drive your own vehicle. For most small operators in and around Glasgow, that is a handful of jobs before the course has paid for itself.
Questions we get asked about this
Carrying goods for hire or reward in a vehicle over 3,500kg generally requires a goods vehicle operator licence, and that in turn requires a qualified transport manager for a standard licence. Our Transport Manager CPC course covers that qualification.
C1 covers a trailer up to 750kg only. Heavier trailers need C1+E, which is a further test taken after C1, so tell us the trailer weight when you enquire.
Twelve hours of tuition is usually two or three days. Allowing for the medical, provisional entitlement and theory test, most customers are through in four to six weeks.
Yes, and it is common. We can schedule people one after another so the business is not without a driver, and provide invoices for the business rather than the individual.
