Driving Artics: What the C+E Licence Involves

The Class 1 entitlement, from coupling and uncoupling to the reversing exercise, and what changes the moment there is a trailer behind you.

Category C+E, known in the trade as Class 1, lets you drive an articulated tractor and trailer or a rigid with a heavy drawbar trailer. You must already hold Category C. The training adds coupling and uncoupling, trailer awareness and a considerably harder reversing exercise, and our course covers it in twenty five hours in the vehicle for £2,895.

What is new compared with a rigid

The vehicle bends. That single fact changes reversing, roundabouts, tight yards and every mirror check. On a rigid, the back follows the front. On an artic, the trailer cuts inside your line, and reversing means steering the wrong way on purpose and reading the trailer in the mirror before it runs away from you.

Coupling and uncoupling

This is a tested procedure with a fixed logic to it: park square, connect and disconnect in a set order, check the fifth wheel, handle the legs, check the lines and the number plate, and prove the trailer is secure before moving. Examiners want a driver who does it the same way every time, not a driver who improvises.

The reversing exercise, honestly

This is the part most people worry about, and it is the part that responds best to hours. It is a controlled manoeuvre into a bay through cones with a limited number of shunts. Drivers who pass first time are the ones who learned reference points rather than guessing, and who got used to stopping, getting out and looking when the mirror stopped telling them enough.

Rigid skills compared with articulated skills
SkillHow it differs on C+E
Left turnsTrailer cuts in, so the approach is wider and slower
ReversingSteer into the mirror, then correct, with limited shunts
CouplingA tested procedure in a fixed order
BrakingWeight and trailer load change stopping distance
Yard workBlind side manoeuvring becomes a daily skill

Who takes this course

  • Class 2 drivers who want trunking, container or general haulage work
  • Drivers whose employer has moved from rigids to artics or drawbar
  • People taking C and C+E back to back to get straight onto Class 1 work

Doing C and C+E together

It works well if you can clear the time. Category C first, then C+E while the vehicle handling is fresh, with no gap for skills to go rusty. It is more time off work in one block and more money in one go, so it suits people making a clean career change more than people fitting training around shifts.

Twenty five hours is there because trailer work needs repetition. Nobody becomes comfortable reversing an artic in an afternoon, and no examiner is fooled by a driver who has only done it a handful of times.

After the pass

Expect an assessment drive with a new employer, and expect to spend your first weeks slower than the drivers around you. That is normal and it is not a problem. Yard confidence and blind side reversing come from months on the job, not from test day. Driver CPC periodic training keeps the professional side current at £55 per seven hour course.

Questions we get asked about this

Yes. Category C must be held before you can take the C+E test, which is why people either train for both in sequence or return for C+E after time on rigids.

Once I passed my theory/hazard perception test, I the took my C1 training with Jordan, who made my driving experience a pleasure, Jordan was patient and made me feel at ease the whole time I was driving: advising on things I might change and letting me know when I had driven well etc, really relaxed me to the point of passing my test 1st time after 10hrs of lessons. Very happy customer.

I recently trained for a Class 1 licence with Pass4me and managed to pass first time due to the great training I received. Everyone was very helpful, helped me gain confidence, and made the training enjoyable with the daft patter. Highly recommend David and the rest of the team if you are looking to do HGV training!
