Class 2 to Class 1: How the Upgrade Works

What changes between the two

Category C covers rigid lorries over 3.5 tonnes up to 32 tonnes. C+E adds a detachable trailer over 750kg, taking you to articulated and drawbar work with a maximum weight of 44 tonnes. The step is less about more weight and more about a vehicle that bends in the middle. Reversing, turning and positioning all behave differently once the trailer pivots behind you.

What carries over from Class 2

• Your road experience in a large vehicle, mirrors discipline and forward planning
• Knowledge of drivers' hours, tachographs and vehicle checks
• Your Driver CPC qualification, if you drive professionally
• Familiarity with the test format and the examiner's expectations

What is new

Coupling and uncoupling the trailer is the most obvious new skill, and it is part of the test. The reversing exercise is performed with the combination, where steering inputs are reversed and the trailer responds with a delay. On the road you will learn to judge the swept path of the trailer at junctions and roundabouts, where the rear wheels cut in far tighter than on a rigid.

The upgrade route step by step

Why go straight to Class 1 instead?

Some new drivers ask whether they can skip Class 2 and go directly to Class 1. Category C is needed before C+E, so the two licences are taken in order. People who know they want Class 1 often plan both courses together; those who are unsure frequently start with Class 2, work for a while, and upgrade when an employer asks for it.

Budgeting for the upgrade

Our published C+E course is £2,895, with the medical, theory and case study, study material, in-vehicle training and test included. If you drive professionally and still need the Driver CPC Module 4 practical demonstration, that is £199 including training and the test. Finance options are available and the team can talk through timings from our Glasgow base.

How long the upgrade takes

Timescales depend on test availability and how quickly you settle into the combination. Drivers with a lot of Class 2 experience often adapt faster on the road, but coupling and reversing still need focused practice, because they are new movements rather than refinements of old ones. Our C+E course includes 25 hours in the vehicle, and lessons are tailored to the individual, so time goes where you need it most.

Checking the job before you upgrade

Look closely at the work you want. Many distribution, trunking and container roles ask for Class 1, while local multi-drop work is often done in rigids on Class 2. If an employer is offering Class 1 work, ask what vehicles and trailers you would be using. That tells you whether to focus extra practice on articulated or drawbar combinations and helps you arrive on day one ready for the actual role.

Test-day differences for Class 1

On the C+E test the examiner will ask you to uncouple the trailer, move the tractor unit away, then return and recouple safely, checking the fifth wheel, lines and landing legs in the right order. The reversing exercise uses the full combination, so the marked bay feels very different from the rigid version you passed before. Road driving follows the familiar pattern, with extra attention on how you position for the trailer at bends and roundabouts.
