CPC Module 2: The Driver CPC Case Study Test

What the case study test involves for lorry and bus drivers, how it is marked, how to prepare and how it fits with Module 4.

CPC Module 2 is the case study test that forms the theory part of initial Driver CPC. You read short scenarios based on real working situations and answer questions about them on a computer at a theory test centre. It is separate from the licence theory test. Preparation for the case study is included in our C1, Category C, C+E, D1 and Category D course prices.

Where Module 2 fits

Initial Driver CPC for new professional drivers has two tests: Module 2, the case study, and Module 4, the practical demonstration. They sit alongside the licence tests, which are the theory test (Module 1) and the practical driving test (Module 3). You need to pass both CPC modules, as well as getting the licence, before you can drive a lorry or bus for a living.

Module 1

Licence theory: multiple choice and hazard perception.

Module 2

Driver CPC case study test, covered on this page.

Module 3

The practical driving test for the licence.

Module 4

The Driver CPC practical demonstration.

What the case study test looks like

The test is made up of seven case studies, each a short story about a working situation: planning a delivery, dealing with a defect, managing a long day under drivers' hours rules, handling an incident or looking after passengers. You answer 50 questions in total across the case studies, in a range of formats, and the test lasts 75 minutes. The pass mark is 40 out of 50.

What catches people out is that the questions reward judgement, not memory. You are asked what you would do next, or what the safest choice is, using the information given. Reading the scenario carefully matters more than speed.

CPC Module 2 for buses

Bus and coach drivers sit a passenger version of the case study. The structure is the same, but the scenarios centre on passengers rather than loads: helping someone with reduced mobility, managing a full vehicle, a breakdown with passengers on board or dealing with conflict. If you are training for D1 or Category D, prepare with passenger material.

How to prepare for the case study test

  • Revise drivers' hours, tachographs, load security and vehicle checks in the context of a working day.
  • Practise with full case studies, not just single questions.
  • Read every question to the end; several answers can look right until the last detail.
  • Use the same official material as your licence theory, so the two reinforce each other.

Our licence courses include theory and case study preparation with study material, so you prepare for Module 1 and Module 2 together. Many drivers book them close together for that reason.

After you pass

A Module 2 pass is valid for two years, so plan Module 4 within that time. The Module 4 training and test package is £199 with us. Once both modules and the licence are complete, your Driver Qualification Card is issued and posted to you.

On the day

Bring your provisional licence to the theory test centre and arrive in good time. The case study is taken on a computer, with the scenario on screen alongside the questions, so you can scroll back to check details before answering. You receive your result at the centre. If you do not pass, you can rebook after the minimum waiting period, so use the feedback on weaker topics to focus your revision.

Who does not need Module 2

If you only drive within an exemption, such as some non-commercial uses, you may not need Driver CPC at all. Drivers who already have acquired rights or an expired card renew through 35 hours of periodic training, not by taking Module 2 again. Check your situation before booking a test you may not need.

What Our Customers Say

Feedback from our learners

Once I passed my theory/hazard perception test, I the took my C1 training with Jordan, who made my driving experience a pleasure, Jordan was patient and made me feel at ease the whole time I was driving: advising on things I might change and letting me know when I had driven well etc, really relaxed me to the point of passing my test 1st time after 10hrs of lessons. Very happy customer.

I recently trained for a Class 1 licence with Pass4me and managed to pass first time due to the great training I received. Everyone was very helpful, helped me gain confidence, and made the training enjoyable with the daft patter. Highly recommend David and the rest of the team if you are looking to do HGV training!
