HGV Driver Jobs in Glasgow: Work, Routes and Progression
What the work looks like across the central belt, which categories open which jobs, and how drivers add earning power after qualifying.
Category C opens rigid work in distribution, construction and municipal fleets around Glasgow. C+E opens trunking, container and tanker work, which is where the strongest pay sits. Adding ADR or a Transport Manager CPC increases earning power further, and we assist drivers with full time haulage employment.
What each category actually gets you hired for
| Category | Typical work around Glasgow |
|---|---|
| C1 | Ambulance, welfare, catering and 7.5 tonne multi drop |
| Category C | Supermarket and parcel distribution, tippers, refuse, utilities |
| Category C+E | Trunking between depots, container work, curtainsider haulage |
| C+E with ADR | Fuel and chemical tanker work, including the Grangemouth corridor |
| D1 and D | School contracts, community transport, service buses and coaches |
How drivers increase what they earn
The pattern we see repeatedly is Category C first, then C+E once someone is working and confident, then ADR to move into tanker or hazardous work. Night trunking and shift premiums add further. Drivers who eventually want off the road take the Transport Manager CPC and move into compliance or operations.
Employment support
We assist drivers with full time haulage employment. That is part of why our courses attract career changers rather than only people topping up an existing licence, and it is worth raising on your first call so we know what you are aiming at.
We train drivers across Glasgow and up to 60 miles out, including Paisley, Motherwell, Cumbernauld, Falkirk, Kilmarnock and Stirling.
Questions we get asked about this
C+E, described in adverts as Class 1, appears most often and generally carries the strongest rates. Category C work is plentiful and is where most career changers start.
It opens tanker and hazardous goods work that is closed to drivers without it, which is why so many experienced drivers add it.
We assist drivers with full time haulage employment. Mention it when you enquire so we know that is your goal.
Where to go next
- Category C+E training the Class 1 licence employers ask for most.
- ADR training classes the add on that opens tanker work.
- Transport Manager CPC the route into operations and compliance.

Once I passed my theory/hazard perception test, I the took my C1 training with Jordan, who made my driving experience a pleasure, Jordan was patient and made me feel at ease the whole time I was driving: advising on things I might change and letting me know when I had driven well etc, really relaxed me to the point of passing my test 1st time after 10hrs of lessons. Very happy customer.
