Why quotes look so different from each other

Two schools can advertise prices thousands apart and both be telling the truth, because they are pricing different things. One figure may cover tuition only. Another may include the medical, the theory, the study material, the vehicle, the fuel, the instructor and the test fee. Before you compare numbers, get each school to list what falls inside the price and what you would be invoiced for separately.

The costs in the order you meet them

1. 1Provisional entitlement. You apply to DVLA using the D2 application and a completed D4 medical report. There is no fee to add provisional lorry or bus entitlement to an existing licence.
2. 2The D4 medical. A doctor completes the report. Prices vary widely across the UK because it depends who you see. Ours is arranged and included in the licence course price.
3. 3Theory, both parts. Multiple choice and hazard perception are booked with DVSA and carry a fee each. Retakes cost the same again, which is the single most common way people overspend.
4. 4Case study, Driver CPC part two. Needed if you will drive professionally rather than privately.
5. 5In vehicle tuition. The biggest single element. Twelve hours for C1, sixteen for Category C, twenty five for C+E.
6. 6The practical test, and Module 4 if you are going professional at £199.

The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest outcome. A failed test means a new test fee, more tuition hours and often weeks of waiting, which costs more than the difference between two quotes ever did.

Costs people forget entirely

Travel to and from training, time off work for test day, a digital tachograph card if your employer does not issue one, and a passport style photo for the licence. None of them are large on their own, and all of them turn up at once.

Where the money is best spent

Put it into tuition hours rather than a second attempt. If you are undecided between Category C and C+E, work out the vehicle you actually want to be driving in a year. Training for C first and returning for C+E later is a perfectly normal route, and it spreads the cost, but it does mean two test days and two blocks of time off.
