Is HGV Driving a Good Career? An Honest Look at Pay and Hours
What the work is genuinely like week to week, where the money actually comes from, and the parts of the job people wish they had been told before they trained.
For people who want steady work without an office, it holds up well: demand is consistent, Class 1 rates are strong, and training is short compared with most qualifications. The trade offs are early starts, time away from home on trunking and tramping work, and sitting for long periods.
The honest side of the money
Basic rates rarely tell the story. Night premiums, weekend rates, tramping allowances and overtime are where the difference shows up, and two drivers on the same nominal rate can end a month far apart. Agency work often pays a higher hourly figure with less certainty of hours.
Shift patterns and what they cost you

Who tends not to
If you need a fixed nine to five, dislike being on your own, or have caring commitments that cannot flex, the industry will feel like a fight. It is better to know that before you pay for a course, and we would rather tell you now than after.
Where it can lead
Driving is not the ceiling. ADR opens tanker and hazardous loads, and Transport Manager CPC at £1,100 moves you into operations, compliance and running an operator licence. Several drivers we trained on Category C have come back years later for the Transport Manager course.

Once I passed my theory/hazard perception test, I the took my C1 training with Jordan, who made my driving experience a pleasure, Jordan was patient and made me feel at ease the whole time I was driving: advising on things I might change and letting me know when I had driven well etc, really relaxed me to the point of passing my test 1st time after 10hrs of lessons. I recently trained for a Class 1 licence with Pass4me and managed to pass first time due to the great training I received. Everyone was very helpful, helped me gain confidence, and made the training enjoyable with the daft patter. Highly recommend David and the rest of the team if you are looking to do HGV training!

Best experience for driver training I've come across! 1st time pass on my class 1 with ease. Tom top lad easy to get on with and plenty experience and Davey is brand new helped out a lot through the process. Would definitely recommend to anyone thinking of doing any sort of driver training to give the guys a call.
