What the qualification involves

Transport Manager CPC is the qualification a named transport manager needs before a standard goods or passenger operator licence can be granted. You choose one route: road haulage for lorry operators or passenger transport for bus and coach operators. Each route has its own syllabus and two examination papers, one multiple-choice and one case study. The syllabus covers law, finance, drivers hours, vehicle maintenance, safety and the duties that come with running an operator licence.

What affects the overall cost

  • Classroom or online: the classroom price includes the test; for online study, check how the exam is arranged
  • Time away from work: ten classroom days in a block, compared with online sessions joined from home or the office
  • Travel: the classroom course is in Glasgow, while the online course removes travel for candidates elsewhere in the UK
  • Resits: passing first time is the cheapest outcome, so set aside proper revision time around the course
  • Who pays: many candidates are funded by the operator that needs a qualified transport manager

Classroom or online: how to choose

Pick the classroom course if you learn best with a tutor and other candidates in the room, can set aside ten days, and want the exam included in one price. Pick the live online course if you are outside commuting distance of Glasgow or need to keep working around the sessions. The online course is taught live, not as recorded videos, so you can still ask questions as you go.

Before you book either option, decide which route you need. A haulage qualification does not cover a passenger operator licence, and the other way round.

Questions to ask any provider

  • Is the examination included, or booked and paid for separately?
  • Which route does the course cover, haulage or passenger transport?
  • Is online teaching live with a tutor, or recorded material you work through alone?
  • How many days or sessions are there, and do they fit around your work?

Is it worth paying for?

For an operator, the qualification is a legal requirement of a standard licence, so the real choice is between qualifying someone in-house or paying an external transport manager. For an individual, it is a recognised management qualification that can lead from driving into compliance and transport office roles. Either way, it is a one-off qualification, while holders are expected to keep their knowledge current, and refresher training is available for that.

If you do not need the full qualification

Directors and managers who work alongside a transport manager, but are not named on the licence, may not need the full course. Operator licence awareness training covers the essentials of an operator's duties in a shorter format. If you are unsure whether a transport manager is needed at all, our guide on that question walks through the licence types.

What Our Customers Say

Feedback from our learners

Once I passed my theory/hazard perception test, I the took my C1 training with Jordan, who made my driving experience a pleasure, Jordan was patient and made me feel at ease the whole time I was driving: advising on things I might change and letting me know when I had driven well etc, really relaxed me to the point of passing my test 1st time after 10hrs of lessons. Very happy customer.
