ADR Training Cost: What You Pay and What Changes the Price
How ADR training cost is put together, why two drivers can be quoted differently, and how the refresher keeps renewal cheaper than starting again.
ADR training cost depends on which modules and hazard classes you need and whether you are qualifying for the first time or renewing. With us, the full course starts from £496, including classroom tuition, course materials and the SQA exam, and the ADR refresher course starts from £300 for drivers renewing a certificate before it expires.
What the price actually pays for
An ADR course is classroom training followed by an examination. Our published price covers the tutored days, the course materials and the SQA exam, so the figure you are quoted is the figure you pay to sit the qualification. There is no separate exam booking to add on later, which is worth checking when you compare providers, because a lower headline price that leaves out the exam is not the cheaper option.
The four things that change your ADR training cost
Modules
Everyone takes the core module. Packages covers goods carried in drums, cylinders and other containers. Tanks covers tankers and tank containers. Taking one format costs less than taking both, but both together cost less than coming back for the second one later.
Hazard classes
ADR splits dangerous goods into classes, such as Class 3 for flammable liquids like fuel. Each class you add means more classroom content and more exam questions, so the class list on a job advert has a direct effect on what you pay.
First certificate or renewal
A first certificate needs the full course. A driver who already holds a valid certificate can take the shorter refresher course instead, which is why renewal costs less.
Timing
Renewal is only cheaper while your certificate is still valid. If it lapses, the refresher route closes and you are back to the full course price.
ADR refresher course and ADR renewal
An ADR certificate lasts five years. To keep it, you complete refresher training and pass a further SQA examination before the expiry date. The refresher keeps the classes you already hold, so you are not paying for the full syllabus again. We suggest booking three to six months before expiry: that leaves time to rebook if a date does not suit your shifts, without ever risking the higher price.
Check the expiry date on your ADR card today and put a reminder in your phone six months before it. That one step is the simplest way to keep your ADR renewal at the refresher price.
Matching the course to the job, not the other way round
The most expensive mistake is buying the wrong combination. A driver who takes packages only and then applies for fuel tanker work will need to come back for tanks. Before you book, read the job advert or ask the employer which modules and classes they expect, then tell us exactly what it says. Fuel distribution usually means core, tanks and Class 3. Mixed chemical deliveries often mean packages with several classes.
What you need before you book
- A driving licence for the vehicle you will drive, usually Category C or C+E for tanker work
- A clear idea of the modules and classes your employer or the advert asks for
- Your current ADR card, if you are renewing, so the refresher matches your existing classes
- Dates that fit your rota, because ADR is a classroom course you attend in person
Is ADR worth the cost?
For a qualified lorry driver, ADR is one of the add-ons that turns a licence into a wider choice of work. It is a one-off cost every five years, and the refresher keeps that cost down once you hold it. If you have not yet got your lorry licence, plan the licence first and add ADR once you know which kind of haulage you want to do. Our pricing page lists every course side by side so you can budget for both.
Paying for it
Finance options are available on our courses. Some drivers also have ADR paid for by an employer who needs the qualification on the fleet. If that applies to you, ask your employer before booking, and we can arrange company training and invoicing.
